Holi 2024: While Holi is a celebration of colors and joy, it’s essential to be mindful of the potential health hazards associated with the chemicals used in these colors.
Dr Vikas Doshi, Consultant Physician, Bhailal Amin General Hospital, Vadodara shares the effects of repeated exposure to chemical based Holi colours
Holi, the festival of colors, is a time for fun and making memories. However, Dr Vikas Doshi from Bhailal Amin General Hospital in Vadodara warns us about the flip side of using chemical-based colors during the festivities. These colors may contain harmful chemicals like lead, chromium, and mercury that can have short-term and long-term health effects.
Young friends, it’s important to know what these chemicals can do to our bodies. Apart from causing eye irritation and skin allergies, they might lead to more severe problems like temporary blindness or even increase the chances of developing cancer if we are exposed to them repeatedly over time.
Playing under the sun with these chemical-laden colors can also strip our skin of moisture, leaving it dry and dull. Plus, ever heard of something called gentian violet in water colors? It’s another risky substance you might want to avoid!
Also, those of us with asthma or sensitive noses, breathing in the fine powder of these colors could trouble our respiratory systems further. Not to mention, they can trigger allergic reactions like dermatitis or eczema for those with sensitive skin.
But hey, don’t worry too much! Dr Doshi suggests some simple steps to keep us safe while we enjoy Holi. Moisturizing our skin before stepping out, oiling our hair, wearing sunblock, and opting for full-sleeved clothes can be quite helpful. Drinking lots of water is also key to staying hydrated and washing off toxins.
After the fun is over, removing the colors gently with a mild face wash and lots of water is crucial to avoid any skin irritation.
So, as we gear up for a colorful Holi, let’s remember to play it safe. By being mindful of the dangers associated with chemical colors and taking the necessary precautions, we can ensure a happy and healthy celebration. Stay colorful, stay safe!
